About This Lullaby
Every child looks at the moon with a sense of mystery and wonder, and at some time begins to think of the moon as a friend. It lights our nights, it sends its gift of moonbeams on our windowsills, it plays hide and seek in the clouds like a child. What better way to say "Goodnight" to the moon than with a pretty lullaby?The lullaby, Goodnight, Mister Moon, was written from a perspective of great familiarity with and friendship toward the moon. For many years, before I began to write lullabies which helped me to go peacefully to sleep whenever I wanted, I was wakeful at night, and the moon shining in my window was my only "friend" for long hours in the night. Also, I have walked my dog each night for many years, and the beautiful night sky has never ceased to inspire a sense of wonder and majesty for me. I have read many books about the moon, about its characteristics and its mysteries, which are numerous. A lullaby to tell the moon "goodnight" was a very natural children's song for me to write; and the portrayal of a little child's offering the moon his friendship because "the stars are there, but very far away, and you may need a friend who's closer by," seemed very tender and charming to me.
