"Skip to My Lou" is one of the favorite children's songs among American folk songs from early times. The origin of this lullaby is unknown, but it was sung often in the late eighteenth century by the pioneers who settled in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Known as a play-party song, Skip to My Lou may be Scottish in origin, since "lou" is the Scottish word for "love". However, "lou", in Southern dialect, also means "sweetheart". Play-party songs were used during social events among young people. Since they provided an innocent form of social activity, the children's songs were approved by parents in the community.
